About Security & Forms tools
PDFs support two different passwords. A user password is required to open the document at all. An owner password leaves it readable but restricts printing, copying, or editing. The protect tool sets these; the unlock tool removes them from a file you can already open.
Unlock is for documents you are entitled to — a statement your bank encrypted with a password it told you, or a file you protected yourself and no longer need locked. It requires the password; it is not a way past encryption you do not have the key for. Both tools run on the server because the cryptography needs it, and the file is deleted within the hour.
